King of the Hoard
A downloadable game for Windows
Created for the inaugural Mechanic Jam, King of the Hoard is a turn-based strategy game that places you in the role of a classic dungeon boss defending your treasure from those dastardly adventurers! You and your Imps need to fend off the adventurers for as long as you can, because if the adventurers swarm your treasure hoard for too long, it's game over.
When playing the game you'll likely want to keep debug mode turned on, because there isn't really a UI at the moment and the debug text gives you a better idea of what is currently going on, what unit is selected/acting, etc.
There also isn't a point system or anything, so it's mostly just a loop until you lose. The idea is to add in points for getting further through rounds and killing more adventurers that will allow you to upgrade in a rogue-like fashion.
Gameplay
As the dungeon boss, your objective is to defend your treasure from the adventurers.
You will do this with the help of your Imps, who spawn from lava pits and shoot fireballs.
You will be defending your treasure from the adventurers, who will be attacking you with Paladins that spawn from stairs into your dungeon.
If the adventurers outnumber you and your minions in the treasure hoard at the start of their turn, they have dominated that round. If they dominate too many rounds, the game is over.
Controls:
F1 | Toggle Debug Mode |
F2 | Skip to Game Over screen |
Space | End current unit's turn |
P | Spawn Paladin at cursor (enemy unit; only works in debug mode) |
I | Spawn Imp at cursor (friendly unit; only works in debug mode) |
K | Kill unit at cursor |
Inspiration and Thanks
Inspiration has been heavily drawn from games like Dungeon Keeper, X-COM, and rogue-likes (at least, the future plans are in the rogue-like vein).
I've dabbled with Game Development for years, but this is the first jam I've done and the first game I've released for the public, so please be gentle! The game was created in the evenings over the past 10 days, so there are definitely some rough edges. Getting the game to this level of completeness would never have been possible without the awesome Dungeon Crawl 32x32 Tile pack from opengameart.org. It also would not have been possible without the fantastic tutorials of sergeant indie. I'm incredibly grateful for them.
